In a recent interview with Audubon magazine, Dr. Keunhyun Park emphasized the importance of improving public transit access to public lands across cities in the United States. His research sheds light on the inequalities certain communities face when accessing natural spaces, highlighting the need for more inclusive transportation solutions.
The article, “Why Cities Need Better Public Transit to Public Lands,” delves into the findings of a study by Dr. Park in 2021. The study investigated public transit access to large parks in 15 of the largest western U.S. cities, and the results were concerning. In 12 of these cities, it was discovered that lower-income communities, people of colour, and seniors had to contend with longer trips and limited access to large parks, despite relying more on public transit.
Dr. Park’s research unveiled an unfortunate trend where non-Hispanic white neighbourhoods had better transit options, exacerbating disparities in access to green spaces. However, the study did bring some encouraging news for Los Angeles, Denver, and Tucson, as they displayed little evidence of unequal access to large parks. This was attributed to the proactive approach taken by these cities in investing in public transit access to nature, particularly in high-need neighbourhoods.
Dr. Park’s work has been instrumental in creating awareness among public officials about the importance of providing car-free ways to access public lands. With a growing focus on sustainable and equitable urban planning, more than 100 “transit to park” initiatives have been identified across the United States and Canada since his initial research.
Research and advocacy on Transit-to-Parks initiatives have sparked a positive movement toward inclusive transportation planning, with cities recognizing the importance of equitable access to public lands. By promoting public transit options that cater to the needs of all communities, regardless of income or ethnicity, urban areas can ensure that everyone can connect with nature and experience the many benefits that green spaces offer.
